Let’s journey back to a pivotal moment from the past. The year was 1970, a year that saw me elected to the State House of Representatives from Kailua-Waimanalo-Olomana-Maunawili. That year marked the beginning of an intense quest, driven by my growing concern over what I perceived as the theft, misappropriation, and misuse of Hawaiian Homelands.
Armed with the evidence I had diligently gathered, I took my findings to Washington, presenting them to Senators Hiram Fong and Daniel Inouye. It was Senator Fong who welcomed me into his office, where a memorable photograph was taken. This photo, which I recently discovered in a long-forgotten box stored in Hawaii, captures us with the Capitol visible through the window in the background.
The photo bears the marks of time, with traditional silverfish and water damage - a fate all too common for paper items stored in Hawaii for extended periods. Yet, despite its wear and tear, finding this photo was like unearthing a hidden treasure, a delightful piece of ephemera that brought back a flood of memories. Accompanying this post is that very photo, a testament to a time of determination and discovery.
Still discovering,
Diana
