In 1968, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my life. I decided to run for the State Constitutional Convention. Against all odds, I won a seat by a narrow margin of just 93 votes. My campaign platform was simple and down-to-earth, resonating with the everyday people I sought to represent.
My mother, Audrey, was my biggest cheerleader. She would stand by the highway, waving enthusiastically at passersby, holding a sign that read “Mothers For Diana.” Inspired by her spirit, I followed suit. Accompanied by my two Great Danes, I would stand by the highway, waving a sign that read “Dogs For Diana.”
Emboldened by the support I received, I decided to take the next step. I ran for the Hawaii State House of Representatives. The campaign was tough, but the people’s faith in me was unwavering. I won a seat there, making history. At the tender age of 20, I became the youngest official to ever hold the title.
Looking back, I am filled with gratitude for the journey and for the people who believed in me. As I share this photo with you, I am reminded of the power of perseverance, the importance of staying true to oneself, and the incredible potential that lies within each of us. Stay tuned for more stories from my journey.
Sincerely,
Diana
